A quick post...

I'm sitting here at the bar in the Hilton with the ocean right in front of me. So blue in all the sunshine here! Linnea let me use her laptop for a few minutes. : )

I walked on the beach yesterday for 45 minutes, just loving the sand and the water under my toes. I've seen soooo many people and still have a couple more I want to find.

The Ellora's Cave party was last night and...yeah, wow. Linnea took some pictures which I'm hoping she'll send me to post here.

More details later! Having a great time. : )

The Groovy Gatsby
Peace signs and yin yangs, tie dye and bell bottoms: welcome to the decade of the 70’s. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald would be called The Groovy Gatsby during this decade. By changing the setting of the book and putting the characters in strange environments, the plot completely evolves. Mr. Jay Gatsby in the 20’s was a well known, respected, rich businessman but living in the 70’s Gatsby would not be wealthy, Daisy would have divorced Tom, and Daisy would have been charged with the murder of Myrtle Wilson.
The 70s or the hippie era had different priorities than the roaring 20’s. The 70’s were full of drugs, sex, and good music. A character like Mr. Gatsby would change immensely. Gatsby would not have gotten rich because bootlegging was not a problem in the 70’s. Also Gatsby’s style of clothes would include an afro, bell-bottoms, and a tie-dyed flowery silk shirt which is a contrast from nice suits. The linguistic style would be informal using slang such as “groovy” or “righteous”. Also, the environment would be an important issue instead of prohibition. The differences made within 40 years change all aspects of the storyline and character bases.
Not only do personality and appearance change with the era, but the outside influences of different social acceptances cause a change as well. In the 20’s, Tom and Daisy could not get a divorce due to the personal shame and embarrassment it caused the family. But in the 70’s it was more socially acceptable to separate. The affairs that went on would also happen more frequently even today in present time. It would not be an open relationship like Tom’s affair, but it does occur.
Finally, the laws and technology in the 70’s would be different. When Daisy killed Myrtle, Gatsby wanted to take the blame; that could not have been done. Since technology and science became more advanced, Daisy would have been charged with murdering Myrtle which would probably have kept Gatsby alive. Other technological differences such as TV’s, advanced phones, and amplifiers would change the lives of The Great Gatsby’s characters. The outside affects of society in the 70’s would cause different outcomes.
In conclusion, the plot line of The Great Gatsby would assuredly have alternate beginnings and endings if set in the 70’s. The characters personal aspects as well as appearance would follow the times. Instances such as Gatsby becoming wealthy with “new money”, Daisy and Tom married but morally haunted by their affairs, and Daisy’s accident with Myrtle would deviate from the original setting. These characters were just victims of their surroundings and era. Although the 70’s was a great decade, The Great Gatsby would lose most of its shining characteristics and originality.
